Temporary Suspension of Civil Flight Operations at 32 Airports in India

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced the temporary closure of civil flight operations at 32 airports across northern and western India. Effective from 9th to 14th May 2025, the decision was formally issued via a series of Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), citing operational reasons and airspace prioritization.

This suspension will directly affect both domestic passenger carriers and cargo flights. The decision was made in coordination with regional Air Traffic Control (ATC) units and security agencies. The move also includes partial airspace restrictions in Delhi and Mumbai FIRs.

List of Affected Airports

The following 32 airports are affected by the NOTAMs and will remain closed for civil operations during the specified period:

  • Adampur, Ambala, Amritsar, Awantipur, Bathinda
  • Bhuj, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon
  • Jaisalmer, Jammu, Jamnagar, Jodhpur, Kandla
  • Kangra (Gaggal), Keshod, Kishangarh, Kullu Manali, Leh
  • Ludhiana, Mundra, Naliya, Pathankot, Patiala
  • Porbandar, Rajkot (Hirasar), Sarsawa, Shimla, Srinagar
  • Thoise, Uttarlai

25 ATS Route Segments Temporarily Closed

As per NOTAM G0555/25 (replacing G0525/25), a total of 25 route segments within the Delhi and Mumbai Flight Information Regions (FIRs) are also unavailable. These closures span ground level to unlimited altitude and are expected to last until 2359 UTC on 14th May 2025 (i.e., 0529 IST on 15 May).

Flight operators have been advised to avoid these sectors and follow updated advisories issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and local ATC authorities. Alternate routings are available for long-haul and regional routes via secondary corridors.

Infinitrix Forecast – Eshorjit says:
This large-scale NOTAM sweep suggests coordination between military and civil aviation agencies, possibly for scheduled defence exercises or contingency drills. We forecast a likely increase in indirect flight durations over northern India and surge in operations at alternative hubs like Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Dehradun over the next 5 days.
